Our Story – The Journey Behind DVA

Robert J. Hamilton

Robert J. Hamilton was born on October 27th, 1942, in the small town of Rodessa, Louisiana. Growing up in a modest home, Robert was raised alongside his many siblings by his mother. He was no stranger to the harsh realities of racial prejudice and discrimination during the Jim Crow era. Yet, despite these challenges, Robert harbored dreams of improving the lives of both his family and himself. He knew that to achieve success, he would need to be persistent and determined in every endeavor.

In 1962, Robert was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served as an infantry medic during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge in 1964. This experience would shape his character and fuel his drive to pursue greater things.

After his service, Robert worked tirelessly to turn his childhood dreams into reality with the motivation of wanting to live a better life and with the sudden loss of his father at the age of 16 on Christmas night which helped him realize that he needed to step up for himself and his family. With these motivations and his entrepreneurial spirit, led him to build multiple successful businesses, including ventures in real estate and the Disabled Veterans Alliance. Robert’s passion for helping others has always been at the heart of his work. He believes that anyone can transform their life with a dream and unwavering persistence.

Reflecting on his own journey, Robert often says, “I was just a little boy from a small, poor town in Louisiana. If I can do it, anyone can.”

My motivation for creating my nonprofit stems from a fundamental belief that every person, especially those who have served our country, deserves access to necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing.

Growing up, I watched my uncle, a former U.S. Army veteran, grapple with the effects of his service. He developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and turned to alcohol to cope with the trauma of war. Seeing his struggles made me wonder how many other veterans faced similar challenges and whether there was a way to help them get the support they truly needed. Also as an adult, I would often drive through Downtown Los Angeles near Skid Row, I would notice numerous homeless people including a lot of veterans—individuals who risked their lives for this great country—living on the streets. These were people struggling to find their next meal, sleeping on sidewalks, and grappling with an uncertain future. It broke my heart to witness this reality and left me asking: How did it get this bad? and What can I do to help?

This was the seed for the Disabled Veterans Alliance. Disabled veterans often face significant challenges when reintegrating into civilian life, from finding stable housing to accessing essential resources. It is deeply troubling that many veterans, particularly those who are homeless, are deprived of these basic human rights.

Driven by a commitment to change this reality, my nonprofit was founded to provide disabled veterans with the support they need to live fulfilling lives alongside their families. Beyond immediate assistance with food, shelter, and clothing, my organization focuses on empowering veterans by educating them on how to access vital resources. This includes guidance on job placement, pursuing higher education, and navigating government disability benefits. By equipping veterans with the tools and knowledge they need, we aim to help them achieve self-sufficiency and ultimately fulfill their version of the American dream.
